“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process
and you improve the quality of life
The Feldenkrais Method® is an innovative way of using the movement resources you were born with to get more out of your life and living. As a human being you are designed for curiosity and exploration - you are born with stuff still to learn about how to move and understand. Not only that but your whole structure is based on instability - meaning that you are always primed to explore the next new idea.
The resources you possess are your moving, your thinking, your perception of the world around and your innate ability to change and adapt to the world around you.
Moshe Feldenkrais was an Israeli engineer who, following a football injury, was convinced that he himself was the source of the skills necessary to work around that injury (and still play football of course). Also a sportsman and a martial artist (one of Europe's first ever Judo Black Belts and the author of the first English-language textbook on Judo), he preferred to continue to be able to do the things he wished to do rather than be restricted either by the outcomes of surgery, or the dominating opinions of other people.
Feldenkrais developed the philosophy and practice of his method between the early 1930s and his death in 1984. First in Israel, then Paris, then in Scotland during World War 2, he began to devise sequences of movement that maintained the level of freedom of movement that he liked to have, and that were necessary for him to achieve his goals. Over time, his work became known worldwide following workshops and trainings in Israel and the US.
The innovative quality of The Feldenkrais Method® lies in its building of a philosophical and practical partnership between freedom of movement, cognitive satisfaction and movement-effectiveness. Linking these three areas of human 'being' makes Feldenkrais a wholistic system of physical intervention. Feldenkrais practitioners are not simply interested in 'sorting out' or 'curing' injury or discomfort. The Feldenkrais Method® supports people to understand the reason behind what is happening and to explore choices in movement that will ensure that, after a Feldenkrais session, the discomfort won't show up again.
The Feldenkrais Method® is organised and regulated in the UK by the UK Feldenkrais Guild. Practitioners who are members of the Guild have undergone the basic four-year training of the International Feldenkrais Federation as devised by Moshe Feldenkrais. In addition they commit to an ongoing process of continuing professional development, to maintain and hone the very special skills of observation, analysis and contact with your central nervous system through your movement. After two years, Practitioners are licensed to lead Awareness Through Movement and on full qualification are licensed to practice Functional Integration. Only fully trained and registered practitioners are allowed to us the trademarks, The Feldenkrais Method®, Awareness Through Movement® and
